The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Trait 5 of 24

Independent

The man who can walk away is the only man who is truly free to stay.

An independent man can stand without anyone's approval, money, or permission propping him up. This is not isolation. A free man still loves and is still loved. But strip away the supports and he is still standing.

Dependence is a quiet form of captivity. The man whose mood rides on someone else's approval has handed them a remote control. The man who cannot survive without a particular paycheck will tolerate things no free man would. Independence is the slow work of removing those remotes, one at a time, until your stability comes from inside. Then you can be disappointed without being destroyed, rejected without being ruined, and you love people because you choose to — not because you would drown without them.

The Stoic source

Epictetus, Enchiridion 1
Of things some are in our power, and others are not. ... And the things in our power are by nature free, not subject to restraint or hindrance; but the things not in our power are weak, slavish, subject to restraint, in the power of others.

Translated by George Long

The Scripture

Galatians 6:5, KJV
For every man shall bear his own burden.

The move

Make one decision, or do one thing solo, that you would normally run past someone for approval — a meal alone, an outing, a choice. Feel the floor hold.
