The man who will not break in private has nothing to prove in public.
Conformity is the easy default. It is rewarded immediately and billed later. A nonconforming man is not against agreement — he just will not agree on command.
He will stand with the group when the group is right, and step away from it when it is not, and he does both without drama. The drama is for men who need you to notice their rebellion. Real nonconformity is quiet: not laughing at the cheap joke, not joining the pile-on, not drinking just because the glass was handed to him. These cost something in the moment — a flicker of social friction, a beat of being the odd one. They earn something that lasts much longer: the respect of men who saw him hold the line when it would have been easier to fold.
