The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Maxim 22 of 23

The man makes safeguarding his energy and focus a priority ensuring he can engage deeply with the world around him on his own terms

They will rob your focus a minute at a time, and you will hand it over smiling.

Attention is a man's most valuable and least guarded possession. Everything around him is engineered to fragment it. The man who spreads himself across everything becomes effective at nothing. The man who concentrates can move what matters.

Money lost can be earned again. Attention spent is simply gone, and a man will guard his wallet ferociously while handing his focus to anyone with a notification. Distraction does not feel like a thief because it takes the day in pieces — a glance here, a scroll there, a small surrender every few minutes — until the evening arrives and the man cannot say where the hours went. The focused man treats his attention as capital. He spends it on few things and finishes them. His output looks small until you realize it is the only output that was real.

The Stoic source

Seneca, Letters 1
Hold every hour in your grasp. Lay hold of to-day's task, and you will not need to depend so much upon to-morrow's. While we are postponing, life speeds by.

Translated by Richard M. Gummere

The Scripture

Proverbs 4:25-26, KJV
Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

The move

Name one major drain on your attention — an app, a feed, an obligation that does not matter. Cut it for seven days. Pour the recovered focus into the one thing that does.
