The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Trait 4 of 24

Unperformative

If it only happened so it could be seen, it was theater, not character.

The unperformative man does the work instead of announcing it. His good deeds do not need an audience. He would rather be something than be seen as it.

We live in a market where virtue is content and every kindness can be posted. The unperformative man opts out. He gives without the caption. He helps without the witness. Not because attention is evil, but because he has noticed what the need for it does to a man — it slowly turns his life into a performance, and a performance is the one thing you can never fully trust. The quiet good he does is the realest thing about him, precisely because no one is clapping.

The Stoic source

Epictetus, Enchiridion 46
On no occasion call yourself a philosopher, and do not, for the most part, talk among laymen about your philosophic principles, but do what follows from your principles.

Translated by W. A. Oldfather

The Scripture

Matthew 6:1, KJV
Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

The move

Do one good thing and keep it completely silent. No post, no mention, no hint dropped in conversation. Let it be enough that it happened.
