Need makes a man stupid. Sufficiency lets him choose.
A self-sufficient man can meet his own needs. He can cook, fix, earn, and sit alone in a room without reaching for his phone. This is not arrogance. It is freedom from needing to be rescued.
The man who cannot stand his own company makes terrible decisions, because need overrides judgment. He takes the wrong job because he is afraid of the gap. He stays with the wrong person because alone feels worse than wrong. He keeps the wrong friends because an empty calendar frightens him. The self-sufficient man has none of these guns to his head. He chooses from strength, not scarcity — and a man who chooses from strength chooses well. He still wants people. He just does not need them to survive, which is exactly why he can love them cleanly.
The Stoic source
Seneca, Letters 9In this sense the wise man is self-sufficient, that he can do without friends, not that he desires to do without them.

The Scripture
Philippians 4:11-13, KJVNot that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
