The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Trait 10 of 24

Original

Better a rough thing that is yours than a perfect thing that is someone else's.

An original man is not weird for sport. He is simply unwilling to be a copy. He would rather be a flawed first edition than a flawless forgery of someone else.

The world has enough copies. They chase the trend, arrive late, and wonder why they are always one step behind — because a copy, by definition, follows. The original studies what came before, takes what is true, and then has the nerve to build the thing only he can build. This is not arrogance. It is stewardship. You were made once, unrepeatably, and to spend that life imitating another man is a quiet kind of waste.

The Stoic source

Seneca, Letters 33
Truth lies open for all; it has not yet been monopolized. And there is plenty of it left even for posterity to discover.

Translated by Richard M. Gummere

The Scripture

Psalm 139:14, KJV
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

The move

Make or do one thing your own way, against the conventional move — but be able to defend why. Originality without reasons is just noise.
