The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Trait 12 of 24

Genuine

A man with one face never has to remember which one he showed you.

The genuine man is the same man alone as in a crowd. No mask for the boss, no second face for his friends, no hidden back room where the real him is kept.

Faking is expensive. The man running several versions of himself is exhausted in a way he cannot name — constantly auditing which persona this situation calls for, terrified the wrong one will slip out. The genuine man has one version to maintain, so he sleeps. He is not always polished, but he is always real, and people relax around him because they are not being managed. There is a deep relief, for everyone, in a man who is simply what he appears to be.

The Stoic source

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 10.16
No longer talk at all about the kind of man that a good man ought to be, but be such.

Translated by George Long

The Scripture

Psalm 15:2, KJV
He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

The move

Find one place where you perform a version of yourself. Drop the act for a day. Say one true thing you would normally dress up.
