The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Trait 11 of 24

Flexible

A man who cannot say "I was wrong" will defend his mistakes for the rest of his life.

Flexibility is the strength to change your mind when the facts change. The reed bends in the flood and stands again. The oak refuses, and the flood takes it whole.

Do not confuse this with having no spine. The spineless man bends to pressure; the flexible man bends to truth. There is a world between them. One folds because he is afraid; the other adjusts because he has seen something better and is honest enough to admit it. The hardest sentence for most men to say is "I was wrong, and here is what I now think." The flexible man says it without bleeding, and walks away lighter, not smaller.

The Stoic source

Epictetus, Enchiridion 8
Seek not that the things which happen should happen as you wish; but wish the things which happen to be as they are, and you will have a tranquil flow of life.

Translated by George Long

The Scripture

James 4:14, KJV
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

The move

When you meet a better argument, change your mind about something small — and say so out loud. Watch how the admission does not destroy you.
