The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Trait 17 of 24

True leader

The strongest man in the room is the one helping everyone else carry the weight.

A true leader serves the men he leads. He eats last. He carries the heaviest load. Authority that has to be announced was never real authority — it was just a title raising its voice.

Men do not follow a real leader because of his position or his threats. They follow because of who he is, and because they have watched him spend himself for them and not the other way around. The counterfeit leader takes the credit and assigns the blame. The true one absorbs the blame and hands out the credit. He is not the strongest man in the room because he dominates it. He is the strongest because he is the one lifting everyone else up — and strength used to lift is the only kind that lasts.

The Stoic source

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 6.54
That which is not good for the swarm, neither is it good for the bee.

The Scripture

Mark 10:43-45, KJV
But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

The move

In one place you lead — work, home, a team — take the worst task yourself and give the credit away. Lead from underneath once and watch what it does.
