The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Trait 15 of 24

Attentive listener

Listening costs nothing and buys everything. It is the gift men never forget.

Most men are not listening. They are reloading — waiting for the gap so they can fire off their reply. The attentive man shows up with his whole presence and actually hears the person in front of him.

Being truly heard is so rare that men will trust almost anything to someone who offers it. The attentive listener is not rehearsing, not waiting to redirect the story back to himself, not reaching for the fix before he understands the problem. He just listens — fully, without agenda — and then asks one more question to prove he was there. It costs nothing but attention, and attention has quietly become the most expensive gift one man can give another. It is also the one they remember longest.

The Stoic source

Zeno of Citium, in Diogenes Laertius, Lives 7.23
The reason why we have two ears and only one mouth is that we may listen the more and talk the less.

Translated by R. D. Hicks

The Scripture

Proverbs 18:13, KJV
He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.

The move

Have one conversation where you listen with no agenda — no solving, no redirecting it to yourself. Just hear the man out, and ask one more question to show you were present.
